Geocaching is a fun activity for adults and children alikeTrimble Outdoors and the Trimble Adventure Planner makes it easy for geocachers to find the cache and document their experience.

Although you don't need to be a geocaching.com member to enjoy Trimble Adventure Planner, members of geocaching.com have added benefits such as the ability to select multiple geocaches in their area (.loc files) and import them directly into Trimble Adventure Planner. Trimble Outdoors’ users who are also geocaching.com premium members can setup queries, for geocaches, which are emailed to them at an interval of their choosing. These GPS Exchange Format (.gpx) files can then seamlessly be imported directly into the Trimble Adventure Planner.

How do I send a geocache directly to my GPS enabled phone?

Single geocaches can be sent directly to your Sprint or Nextel GPS enabled phone right from geocaching.com. You must be a member of Geocaching.com to access this feature but you do not have to be a premium member. Please note:To use this feature, you need to have a Trimble Outdoors Platinum or Gold subscription. This feature is not available if you only have the Trimble Outdoors Silver application on your phone.

Step 1: Log in to geocaching.com and search for geocaches in your area. Select one of the geocaches by clicking on the hyperlink for that geocache.

Step 2: On the web page for geocache selected, click on the "send to phone" link in the upper right hand corner

Step 3: Enter your Trimble Outdoors user name and password. Then, click the "Send to Phone" button. Your geocache is now on its way to your phone!

Step 4: Start the Trimble outdoors application on your phone. Select the page button until you reach the setup display. Select the option Trips. Under the trips option select download. Once the download is complete, select the option set current trip. You may now go to the tracking display or compass display select your geocache waypoint and begin navigating.

How do I import a TopoGrafix LOC Format (.loc) file from geocaching.com?

You must be a member of Geocaching.com to access this feature but you do not have to be a premium member. First log in to geocaching.com and search for geocaches in your area.

Step 1: To the right of each geocache listing is a checkbox; check the caches that you want to import into Trimble Adventure Planner, or at the bottom of the page you can select "check all". Then click on the "download waypoints" button and save the file on your computer.

Step 2: Once the file is on your computer, launch the Trimble Adventure Planner and log in. Select "Tools" from the toolbar and select Trip from the menu then Import.

Step 3: Click "browse" and locate the TopoGrafix LOC Format (.loc) file that you saved on your computer. Once you have done so select open.

Step 4: Now all of the geocaches that you have selected will be displayed on a map of your area. Hover over a point and the name of the cache and the team that placed it will be displayed. You can now zoom in to any cache that you want and save street maps, topographical maps, and even aerial photographs to the trip.

Step 5: Click the send to phone button on the menu bar to send this trip, and all the geocaches to your phone.

Step 6: Start the Trimble outdoors application on your phone. Select the page button until you reach the setup display. Select the option Trips. Under the trips option select download. Once the download is complete, select the option set current trip. You may now go to the tracking display or compass display select your geocache waypoint and begin navigating.

How do I import a GPS Exchange Format (.gpx) file from email? (Geocaching.com Premium Members only)

Premium members of Geocaching.com have the additional option of creating a query that will be sent to them via email at an interval that they specify. Queries can be created on the Geocaching.com website in which members can specify what type, difficulty, and location of geocaches to be sent as a GPS Exchange Format (.gpx) file in an email from Geocaching.com. Once on your hard drive the file can be imported into Trimble Outdoors Adventure Planner that same way as a TopoGrafix LOC Format (.loc) file is imported. Note: A Geocaching.com premium member can setup two queries, one that returns caches they have found and a second which returns caches they have yet to find. By using the import feature twice a Trimble Outdoors user can first import the caches they have found using the "Open Treasure Chest" symbol and then import the caches they have not found using the "Closed Treasure Chest" symbol. By doing this the user will know which caches they have or have not found just by glancing at the map.

Out in the field

Now you are ready to go out and find some geocaches. Once you have arrived in the general vicinity of the cache, use compass page on your phone. Select "Go To" and select the geocache waypoint that you want to find. The compass page tells you what direction the cache is in and the distance to it. When you are close switch to the Map page to use stored maps or use the Tracking page. The great thing about the map page is that it displays your current position on the map as a red dot and the location of the cache as a black dot. Simply walk towards the black dot and when the two dots converge on the screen you have arrived at the waypoint. Now it’s time to put the phone away and use your treasure hunting skills.

Happy geocaching!
