Difficulty Rating
Posted: 04 Sep 09 2:19 PM
Why is the Difficulty Rating always 5/10? Whether I'm doing a recovery ride, fast paced group ride or climbing in the mountains it's always 5/10. How does it calculae the difficulty? thanks

5/10 is just the default for difficulty; I'm guessing you're uploading via GPX or one of our apps. That field is not automatically calculated, so if you want to set a difficulty, use the trip edit page after you upload your trip. Having some way to auto calculate difficulty is an interesting idea though... what criteria would you like to see used to calculate it if there was such a feature?

I just switched to the iPhone app from the Blackberry. Works well excpet battery life and the odd wierd speed reading (100mph).
I would think that you could use your massive database to create a baseline for difficulty. I should probably be based on some formula on speed/time and elavation change.

I find the difficult rating to be so subjective and the problem of incorporating elevation so tricky.
For bicycling routes, I've adopted a rule of using the distance divided by 10 for difficulty. I think that many of us would agree that a century (or longer) ride is inherently difficult (a 10). A 10-mile or less ride is probably generally considered fairly easy (a 1). Clearly, elevation will impact the difficulty but without some pretty complicated formula, this is really tough to incorporate. Using my approach, "difficulty" isn't quite the right label but if it is used in the way I've described, it becomes possible to query for rides in a distance range. For example, looking for rides in the 40-49 mile range is possible by searching based on difficulty of 4.

So, until the search allows for a distance range, the benefit of being able to search by distance range far outweighs the problem of not incorporating elevation into the difficulty rating. IMHO, YMMV.
