We don't have any documented steps or external export/import tool (yet), but any maps you browse on the phone when using our application will be cached.

So, just launch the application, choose "General Navigation", make sure you're on the "Map" tab and then start panning the map around any location at any zoom level. Any maps that get downloaded will be cached and be available out of network next time.

You will also want to make sure the map cache size is sufficient to hold the map area you are interested in. This is done in the settings tab.

Good feedback. Please note that the map caching is pretty different depending on what version of the application you are running, and on which platform.

MedicineMan: what version are you running?

On allmost all versions of Trimble Outdoors, the basic concept is the same: once you see a map, it's cached for you. There are however a few exceptions, so knowing your version number is important.

Thanks!
Bob

MedicineMan: looks like you are using the latest stuff on the Driod, so all you need to do in that version is pan and zoom around, and anything you look at will be saved for later use.

The default cache size is set to 10MB (which stores a lot of maps) but I usually turn mine up to about 30MB personally.

all suggestions taken to heart and I just posted my first experiment 'Hiking 4 Mar' making it public.
OK, no software is perfect but coming off of using 'My Tracks' all I can say is that I am
fairly impressed....the key to folks who are/were wondering the same as me is that you can pan and scan
across the entire country--zoom in on the area where you plan to be and keep zooming knowing that each zoom level is recorded. This way you can anticipate a trip. Also, plans change...if suddenly you are to
be hiking in yet a different area than planned remember to pan/scan/soom on the new area while you still have cell service; this allows the new needed maps to be loaded to your sd card.
The Droid/Trimble are far beyond what I was doing via my BlackBerry Storm--thanks Trimble and thanks to those who responded.

Very cool. Thank you for the kind remarks. We will also be working on a way to get cached map tiles from the web browser, so it might be a little faster and easier to do.

Here is one other tid bit for you. Choose to edit the map for your trip, then change the map type to Terrain or Satellite, and save it. Whatever map type you set in the map editor will be used as the default map type on the View Trip page that everyone sees. So for example, choosing the Google Terrain map type or regular Topo map type in the map editor and saving it will show people that you actually climbed a mountain instead of just walking around.

couple more questions pertaining to map caching.....
Posted: 06 Mar 10 2:34 AM
OK so in 3 weeks I'm hiking in the Sipsey Wilderness area. It's a 6 hour drive and I have already
panned and scanned to that area, zoomed in on several levels, and now the maps are stored.
Here are the questions....
It's a big area...how do you know how much space on the micro-sd card you using?
I read somewhere to keep your maps under 25 tiles--
what is a tile?
how big is a tyle?
Where on my micro-sd card can I see how big the maps are/how much storage space taken?
The pan/scan technique is rather slow...anyway to speed up? I've figured out to use 'street view' to
get in the area and then 'topo' for what I need when hiking/backpacking.
Thanks for any guidance!

Each "square" map image you see loading on your screen is a "tile". Depending on the map type, each map tile image can be anywhere between 5 and 30 KB in size, depending on the map type. I'm not sure where you read the "25 tiles". As an example, I just downloaded 80 map tiles consisting of some street, some aerial, and some topo for a total of 827 KB (less than one megabyte). As Bob said previously, the default cache size is 10 MB, so you can get around 800 map tiles or more with that.

I don't know off the top of my head where the map tiles are stored on the SD card, but if you look around, it shouldn't be too difficult to find.

Topo maps are probably the slowest to download due to where they come from. We'll try and keep you up to date as to when we have the feature available on the computer from the browser.

Excellent info thanks!
I just used Linda File Manager and found the map cache via trimble on the sd card...
so far I've cached 30mb of maps...don't know if that is good or bad.
Still loving this program. I'm the type that can just sit and scan maps for an hour, while
some people might listen to music for an hour!
