Downloading maps for Droid via Adventure Planner
Posted: 23 Feb 10 3:38 AM
I'm using TO on a Droid and I find it incredibly time consuming to downlaod maps to it directly. From what I've read on the forums here I should be able to use Adventure Planner to download the maps on my PC and then send them to the phone. The problem that I'm having is that the "select tiles" feature doesn't work. It changes the cursor to a red circle with a line through it. Also when I select the "Send the selected trip to your phone" button it tells me that I must be a gold or platinum member to use this feature but the Android version is not a subscription membership. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Trimble Outdoors on the Droid does not support preloading of maps. It only supports downloading in-app, over the air. However, there is caching, so that should effectively accomplish what you are trying to do.

Unfortunately, the Adventure Planner software is no longer supported. We offer it for free, for what it's worth, because it is such an old product.

You can use Adventure Planner to pre-plan trips by drawing tracks or marking points of interest. Then all you have to do is save it. Do not use the "Send the selected trip to your phone" feature of Adventure Planner. To view/use the trip on your phone, simply launch the phone application, press your phone's menu key, and choose the My Online Trips option. (Or that menu option my be under the My Trips screen, sorry I don't have that application in front of me.)

I'm sorry for the confusion. We have a bunch of old application versions still out there that we need to support, but in order to move forward with new features, we sometimes have to break backwards compatibility with certain features.

Have you checked out the Online Map Editor? You can view the documentation and some video tutorials here. It has some cool features that Adventure Planner doesn't, like automatically following roads or trails when drawing a track. Aside from trying to preload some maps, are there any other reasons why you like Adventure Planner over the Online Map Editor?

I hope that helps clear up some things. Let us know if you have any other questions or need some more help with something.

Thanks for the quick reply. I wasn't aware of the Online Map Editor but my main purpose of using Adventure Planner was to preload the maps. It would be nice to see this feature available again. There are times where you just don't know where your trip is going to take you and cell covergae is non-existent. Anyway, it's still a great app!

We have been thinking about his use case recently ...and I personally want it for my HTC Hero also :-)

Would you prefer a solution where you can click maps on the web, then download them and cable load them onto your phone, or would you prefer a solution where you could just do massive downloads from the phone itself by choosing a region, map type, and zoom levels?

In the second solution, I would imagine that it would take much longer to download all the data, but might be less of a hassle.

Thanks,
Bob

For me personally I would prefer to download the maps directly on the phone. Currently over Wi-Fi the downloads are very quick but of course moving screen by screen for every zoom level and map type takes forever. I have a trip planned tomorrow that will cover about 80 sq miles most of it via 4x4 and the rest hiking. Now I know ahead of time that I will not have cell reception so I'm trying to download as much of this area beforehand but wow is it time consuming. Having the ability to download the maps in bulk would be a huge time saver. Keep up the good work! This is quickly becoming my favorite app!

I would also like to see the ability to download large map areas to the phone. Being able to select an area on the PC and make it available to the phone would be a huge time saver. The caching ability is handy however when you are away from a PC for an extended period and cell coverage is spotty. At least periodically you can update your cache to cover areas with no cell reception. So the ability to select a method rather than an either/or would be ideal. All this within TO of course.

Thanks for the additional feedback. I had figured the response would be: "Both" :-)

Bill2750: what version of the application are you running? Are you also on Android?

I too really need to be able to transfer maps in bulk to my Moto Droid running TO. I'm often riding or hiking or sailing in areas that have no cell coverage. Thanks for you consideration here!

Good feedback. The more users we hear this from, the higher it moves on our road map, so keep the requests coming :-)

Just to clarify: do you prefer the solution where you download from the PC to the phone, or in bulk directly from the phone?

Thanks!

For the downloading both options would be ideal but if I had to choose 1 or the other I would choose directly on the phone for sure!
Thanks, hope it's part of an update soon!

I second the motion. I plan on hitting up a trip to the Jericho sand duns, near Delta Utah in a month and want to be able to download maps at multiple zoom levels. I'll likely have to do it "manually" but a bulk option would be awesome!

Love the functionality, keep up the good work.

I would also love to see an option to batch download a region of tiles. Would need an option for topo size so I'm not downloading all levels and filling up the cache directory. I personally like to download the entire state of NV at the lowest zoom level, then specific regions at higher zoom levels. I am about half finished with the low zoom whole stated process and it has taken about 7 hours of panning around. I'm affraid I am going to where out my touch scren.

Also would like to see an option to delete a tile. I started getting a lot of tiles that say a map is not available. I know those tiles are there and assume you guys will fix the bug causing that. When that happens I would like to be able to download that tile again.

I have the entire state on my winmo phone using Pathaway. I was able to download the regions I defied in Map Manager and upload to the phone. Can also scan a map, calibrate it by defining a couple points on the image then convert it to a tile. If I could export those maps into Trindle it would saave a lot of time. I'd really like to get rid of the winmo touch pro and just use Trindle on my Droid.

Thanks for considering these items. If I could replaCe those tiles that say no map available I'd be ready to recommend this product to all my piolat and hunting and geocaching buddies. We all use gps and they all haVe a desire to move to smart phone bazsed mapping and caching

Sorry about the typos. I had to use xScope browser because browser cache would not let me log in. I don't think xScope is compatible with this website. I could not see what I was typing.

Trindle obviously equals trimble.

We do have a fix for not caching the "No Map Available" tiles. It will be included in the next release, but I don't have a date for when that will be.

Hope I'm not too late but I also would like to download bulk maps to my phone directly. I would love to be able to download a whole state at a time or at least whole counties/cities. SD cards are cheap now and most phones support at least 16gb cards so dl size should be a distant worry.

No, you're not too late. We are finalizing some licensing issues and will be releasing both a new phone application build and web page to support bulk downloading of map tiles. We'll be sure to keep you all updated.

This is great news. Hope it happens soon. I've got a 10 day back country vacation/trip (hiking & dual sport motorbiking)coming up in June where I'll be out of cell range much of the time and it would be so awesome to be able to use Trimble Outdoors. If you need a beta tester please let me know.

Droid Man: We plan to release the next version of the app for android to the marketplace at the end of the month. This will be the first version of the app that will support side-loading of maps.

We'll try to launch the Tool to download the maps at the same time for you.

That would be awesome! Unfortunately, I just found out yesterday my phone (Behold II) won't be updating to Android 2.0 or even anything past 1.6, so hopefully it will still be compatible with my current OS (1.5). If not I need to get a new phone!

Only the Trimble Outdoors application will need to be updated, not your phone OS.

I definitely prefer to select an area, map type, and zoom level. Download OTA/WiFi is preferred, USB is a distant second choice. Hope this comes soon; off-line topo/satellite is the only reason I bought the app. I'm using the Incredible on Verizon.

Thanks, Bob, for offering us a solution to this dilemma!

PS: The FAQ where it tells us to just zoom around until all the stuff we want is in the cache is an insult. Like, I don't have anything better to do than pan around a 5 x 5 mile area at zoom 16??

Rod, quick update. We are still planning on releasing today. We're on the west coast, so our day may be a little later than yours. The bulk map downloading will consist of a phone application update as well as a web site update.

Once we have released both, we'll let you know more details.
