"Not registered" message
Posted: 19 Feb 10 6:18 AM
Perhaps 1 time in 10, when I start Trimble Outdoors on my BlackBerry Storm, the first thing I see is a message that says something like "not registered". It shows a field with my phone number already filled in. This is puzzling, since I have previously registered the product. I choose the menu choice to register, and then everything works fine ... IF I am in Verizon's coverage area.
The big problem: If I am outside Verizon's coverage area, I am literally "lost in the woods". I cannot access my pre-loaded maps or the GPS features of Trimble Outdoors. The probability of seeing this message seems to increase when I am out of the coverage area. But many times it works fine (but frequently I have to "kick start" the ability to find satellites by first starting the BlackBerry Maps app).
Is there a way to get around this "not registered" problem?

Your subscription is validated with Handmark.com each time you launch the application. When you are out of network coverage, the application is supposed to use the "last known" authorization value.

I'll double check that fact with the developers and we'll see if we can reproduce the problem on our end. Meanwhile, if you have steps in which you can consistently reproduce the problem, please let us know.

Thanks for the quick reply, Kevin! Trying to remember the exact wording, I think it was something more like "device is not yet activated", and there was a menu choice called "Activate".
As far as exact steps go, there's not much to add, since the message comes up immediately upon launching TO. But here are some more organized steps that I sometimes go through leading up to that point to test the "not yet activated" problem, and beyond that point to test the other problem about TO's difficulty starting GPS:
1) Within Verizon's cell phone coverage area, I go to the Storm's Mobile Connections utility and turn off the mobile network to test the problem.
2) Launch TO. Sometimes everything works fine. But sometimes the "not yet activated" message appears - if so, then I have to turn on the mobile network, and click "activate", then everything works fine. (Except for the GPS problem described below.)
3) If the "not yet activated" message did NOT appear, then click "Trips", and select a trip that contains map tiles covering the present location.
4) Click "Maps". This usually produces a "Searching for Satellites" message that will stay on forever with no results.
5) If "Searching for Satellites" won't succeed: Switch applications back to the BlackBerry home screen, and launch BlackBerry Maps to start GPS functioning.
6) Switch applications back to TO. At this point, TO is working fine with GPS, and my present location shows on the map.

One other thing to add: Sometimes the "not yet activated" message will appear even when I am within Verizon's coverage area with the mobile network turned on. This problem occurs much less frequently than when I'm outside the coverage area.

I'm Interested in your troubles with the GPS... does it fail to get GPS on its own most of the time?

With GPS on cellphones their are two types of GPS fixes: Assisted and Autonomous.

Assisted fixes download all the information about the orbits of the satellites from the Verizon network, but everytime it does it costs the carrier a small fee. Our application is not allowed to use this type of fix because of this.

Autonomous fixes download all the information about the orbits FROM the satellites, which takes WAY longer to download (up to 15 minutes sometimes) and requires that the device be fairly stationary while this data downloads. This is the type of fix we are required to do on the Verizon Storm.

I'm guessing that launching BlackBerry Maps is doing an assisted fix and getting all of the orbit data from the network, then the orbit data is cached on the phone so our application can get a fix right away since it doesn't need to download it.

I'll look into this though to see if we can verify that this is the case.

Thanks for the insight, Bob. This all seems logical and consistent with what I've experienced. Yes, it fails to get GPS on its own most of the time. Most of the time I can get another app (BlackStar) to get GPS on its own, but it can take 15 min or so. (It's possible I haven't given TO enough time - but it sure does wear down the battery when I'm in the wilderness.)

I thought of another question about the "not yet activated" problem. On another forum, Michelle from your company mentioned that there's now an option for me to purchase a lifetime subscription for $20. Can you confirm this? And if so, do you think this might solve the problem of Handmark needing to check the activation when I'm out of Verizon's coverage area? (I currently have the $40 one-year license.)

Thanks,
Wendell

That is true, if you buy from BlackBerry AppWorld, it won't try to check in with handmark. If that is what is causing your issue, it will certainly not happen.

I'm not 100% sure that's the cause of your issue though. The version on AppWorld also has a 7 day trial, so you could download it and try it for 7 days to see if the AppWorld version works better for you.

Post back with your findings if you do try this.

I re-purchased Trimble Outdoors, this time from AppWorld, and so far it seems to be working great. I tested it with Verizon's mobile network turned off, and at least so far it is not giving me the "not yet registered" error. Thanks.

Very cool... I'm glad to hear that that has solved your issue. Let us know if there is anything else we can help you with.

BTW: have you recorded any cool trips yet?
