Update Topo Maps?

Just purchased TO for my nexus today. I was checking out the Topo maps for my area and discovered they are quite dated (The hiway I live by, built in the early 70's, doesn't show up). I think I've seen these USFS maps available in the public domain. Is there anything more recent?
How about the ability to upload our own maps? I used to have a Garmin Ique and I found a tutorial that allowed me to download raw data from the USGS and compile my own topo maps and convert to the garmin format and save to my SD card.
Since i'm in a wishful mood... How about pinch-to-zoom on the maps? |

The Topo maps are courtesy of Microsoft Research Maps (formerly TerraServer-USA) and the USGS. You are correct, when it comes to man made items, the maps are outdated. You can see the date of the Topo map by viewing the location on the msrmaps.com web site. This map was done on 7/1/1988. And I see others that date all the way back to 1979. But as far as the contour lines on the mountains go, they are still accurate.
What features of Topo maps are you looking to utilize? We license maps from Microsoft and therefore have their shaded street view available. You can see some shaded mountains here, along with all the roads. The shading only appears at certain zoom levels.
We also utilize the free services from OpenCycleMap.org. Do you find that map more helpful and accurate in your area?
As for being able to "compile" and use your own maps, that's a tough one. It has been requested before and we have discussed it, but it is never high on our priority list. If we ever do get to implement that feature, I'm sure you will hear about it.
I'm not sure about pinch-to-zoom on the maps. Where the whole multi-touch legalities stand and compatibility with older versions. I'll bring it up to the developers though, they should know if it's allowed or not.
Thanks for the interest and the feedback. Let us know what you think about the OpenCycleMap.org maps. |

| I too would really like to see the TOPO maps updated. I gave the OpenCycleMap.org maps a try but I didn't find a single area in California where the maps were available at a high enough zoom level to actually use the data. |

I'm thinking for the US and Canada, partnering with MyTopo might be a good idea. Can you guys give me a quick opinion on these maps? They are still based of the same stuff as USGS, but they seem to be a better copy of the data, and they have shaded relief on some zoom levels.
Here is a preview of the data they provide: http://www.mytopo.com/maps.cfm?search_string=Grand+canyon
Also, we may end up needing to do multiple sources to solve this one :-)

| For the 3 areas that I was looking at near my house, the maps are more modern then the ones you are getting from MS. The hiway I live on is fully complete. The quality of the scan also appears better. |

Bob, I like the looks of these maps. They include the USGS data along with relief shading. I would like to see these as a optional map mode for TO.

Bill: Thanks for the feedback, when you refer to having it as an option, do you mean that you would want it in addition to the USGS topo maps, or would it be reasonable to replace the existing topo maps with these? :-)
Thanks! Bob |

Bob, I feel a replacement to the current USGS would be acceptable. I was referring more along the lines as an option for a particular map mode, ie: (Street, Aerial, MyTopo, Hybrid).

| I just took a look at mytopo.com and compared my most recent few trips with those that are currently in TO. The mytopo.com maps are much more useful and would be a big improvement over what's currently available. |

| I definitely agree that the mytopo.com maps are superior to the other, currently available USGS maps. They are more detailed and refined, which allows the user to more easily understand it. |

| The mytopo maps are far superior. For example, type "san marcos pass" into the search box and look at the boundary between two usgs maps that goes along the bottom of the viewer (e.g. quadrant 21). The maps are perfectly aligned. With your current maps there is almost a quarter quadrant offset between the two maps. This is something you could fix in your app, I've seen this resolved in ExpertGPS years ago, but if mytopo already fixes it, then that's less work... |

| To all, we now have topo maps from MyTopo.com. The maps are available on both the web site and phone applications. For phone applications that support map tile caching (most Android phones), then you may need to clear your cache before the application will download the new maps. |

Are those from MyTOPO or Bing? Either way, it's a big improvement! Now we just need a better way to cache maps! |

| Map types street, aerial, hybrid, and terrain (just hill shaded streets) come from Bing. The topo map type now comes from MyTopo.com (http://www.mytopo.com/). |
