The Trimble Outdoors phone application is intended for activities like hiking and backpacking. It does provide all the normal features of a basic GPS receiver like your current latitude/longitude, elevation, and bearing. There is also a digital compass and maps that can be downloaded while in cellular network coverage. Finally, you can also record your hike as a track and mark or take pictures as points of interest.

Hope that helps. Feel free to ask other questions. Thanks for the interest.

Thanks for the reply.

Next questions.

Could I mark a base point (ex. trailhead) begin my hike then use the GPS function to guide me back to the base point like a typical GPS? If the answer is yes, I have two more questions, will the program display the distance to the base point and can I view my route on a map (google maps) while I'm hiking?

How accurate will the GPS be on the Motorola Karma, will the accuracy be within a few feet or only several hundred meters like the aGPS signals.

Yes, you can absolutely mark a point (several in fact) and navigate back to it. This is one of the primary functions of the app, aside from recording your actual hiking route. You can also view your route on a map if you have cell coverage or pre-loaded the maps for that area onto the phone. The map provider for your phone is not Google maps, though.

GPS accuracy depends greatly on the phone model and the conditions during your hike (mainly, having a clear view of the sky), but several hundred meter accuracy is pretty poor. Most phones are within about 30ft in good conditions. There is a 7 day trial available for your phone through AT&T; I would encourage you to give it a shot and see whether the app will meet your needs. Let us know what you think and whether you have any additional questions.
