Backpackers: The one essential Item
Posted: 14 Jan 09 7:01 PM
I was out backpacking with this buddy of mine and he asked me a great question which I will no ask you ;-)

You are about to be dropped into the wilderness for 3 days. You can choose one (and only one) item to carry with you. What is it and why?

I would take my fire starter. If necessary, one can survive a few days without food and water; however, with out a fire to keep one's self warm, one can freeze to death.

haha, yeah a titanium spork isn't too useful if you don't have any food :-)

For me, I think I would really need to know where you were going to be... If it's really only for two days, and it's a mild environment, I might just bring a book and sit back and enjoy nature.

If it's going to be raining a lot, I'd probably rather bring a trap... etc. etc.

If backpacking has shown me anything it's that different places always require different gear.

One item? Just one? Umm, that would definitely be my K-Bar Bowie Knife. The uses for it are endless, from making shelter, to killing and preparing food, to making fire and self-defense. I agree with Bob, though. I depends a lot on where you will be.

Now, I would be absolutely thrilled if we could get more people to carry enough water here in Arizona, much less anything else. The ignorant blockheads I see on the backcountry trail every time I hike is absolutely amazing. I'll be several miles back into a trail and come across people wearing shorts and sandals, carrying only a 20 ounce bottle of water. Nothing else. Nothing at all. In 100+ degree weather... We need a stupid hiker law similar to our stupid motorist law...

The tarp will not only give you shelter and maybe warmth if you wrap it around you but can also collect rain water and dew
