Skiing function

| I'm going skiing on Sunday and want to try out the program. I'm wondering how this function takes into account your time and distance, etc. for when you're on a chair lift going uphill? Does it only count a run -- skiing downhill and, like the running function, treat a chairlift as "rest" and not count it? Or is that too complicated for this program. |

For downhill skiing you are probably going to want to hit the pause button after you get to the bottom of the hill and ride the lift back up. While this will then allow you to track your whole day in one trip, and give you accurate time and calorie values, it also means that you will have just one track. When you view the trip on the map, your track will have large segments connecting the points between a pause and a restart. It probably won't look very good.
Your other option would be to simply stop the trip at the bottom of the hill and start a new one back at the top. You could then spend some time merging these separate trips into one trip with multiple tracks. We can help you more with that later if you want.
As a third option, we do have another application simply called "Trimble Outdoors" that is used for general purpose hiking and other outdoor activities. It has the capability of recording multiple tracks in the same trip. The only downside is that it does not record timestamps on those tracks or calories. If you have a BlackBerry, you can try any of our applications for free here.
Give it a shot and see if you can find something that works for you. We appreciate your interest and any feedback. |

Kevin, thanks for the tips. Here's some feedback on the program. The program works great for runs, and is really impressive when you chart your results on the satelite maps at the end. To your points above, hitting the pause button at the bottom of runs and restarting at the top of a lift isn't going to work -- mainly because it's a real pain to take ski gloves on and off, and fish out your Blackberry from wherever it's stored. Same goes with stopping and restarting.
The best function on a ski hill, really, is to start it at the beginning of the day and end when you are done. This is what I did.
A couple observations. The calorie function didn't work -- didn't show anything. And while the handheld showed me a 'peak' speed (46 km/h -- I was moving!) it sadly doesn't show up when I uploaded to web site.
By keeping it running, it obviously shows, and counts, my time riding chair lifts. That will obviously impact the overall average speed, time and distance -- and this obviously detracts from getting a good reading of actual exercise time.
A way around this -- and I'm not a programmer, so I don't know if it's easy to do - would be to have the program stop recording data when the GPS senses an increase in altitude (which would correspond with riding a chair lift) and resume when altitude decreases.
This could be treated like "rest time" on the running function, which I suspect is calculated by the lack of movement detected by the GPS in the program.
Those are my suggestions. If it's helpful, I can make my skiing afternoon 'public' for anyone to peruse and= see how it worked

The altitude detection for resting is a very good idea!
I don't know why the calories didn't work for you. Did you happen to set your weight? You can double check that you have a value there under the settings.
We're trying to add more features to the map editor as well. In particular, to be able to split a track. That way you would be able to record the whole day, then hopefully fairly easily break it up online afterwards.
Thanks for the interest in the application and the feedback! |

| Calories works for my running and walking, and weight is set, so don't know why that didn't work. I will make my tracks public, it's for Grouse Mountain in Vancouver. |

Just to chime in on this - I just subscribed last night and I ski all the time. I am going to try it today and was assuming that it would record 'rest' during periods of elevation gain. So, yes, incorporating that into the next version would be a great improvement.
You might just want to rename the activity as "Downhill ski/board" once you do that, so that people won't also use it for nordic skiing, where of course they would want to count their altitude gains in their workouts. |

Steve, once you're finished your skiing day, and upload the data be sure to view it on the satellite view. It's extremely impressive. I swear, I've showed that sat image with my tracks included to a few skiier friends of mine and they are blown away. Enough that they'd consider getting AllSport just for that function. Adding the rising altitude/rest idea would just make it even more valuable. Good point on cross country skiing, though I imagine using the running function would be the same thing, with just a different calorie calculation.

I tired out the pausing function, and it only takes 3 clicks of the bold in order to pause, and i do it all with my berry in a ziplock bag (so no using the ball). In the end you get a neat outcome, the chair lifts show up as yellow lines and the skied tracks are blue, making it alot easier to pick out your differnt runs on the map.

ok, I have tried all the other sports, and the calories show up, but it does not in the ski function. I see other posts dated almost 2 years ago...has this been fixed?? Is there an update that fixes this? I ski 2x a week in the winter as well as long vacations in CO skiing...really would like this to work. Using a NOKIA 6350 phone on ATT. |

| No, calories are not calculated for the Skiing activity type. Unfortunately, I don't know of any plans to change that at this time. |

| May I ask why? would there be an equivelant factor for calculating that, like there is for running? |

It is something that has been carried over from the original version of AllSport and never addressed.
The following forum thread has some additional information along with the equation and a couple activity factor values:

| I've tried reading this thread for information on cross country skiing. Are you aware of any plans to include that in the activities? |

| No, there are no plans. You will have to choose a similar activity, like running, for the application to estimate your calories burned, then upload the trip and change the activity type on the web site by editing the trip information. |

| On the old version of Allsportgps there use to be a xcountry ski option. Now it is not there which I find annoying as that's why I bought it. Is the driving option really that useful? |
