Stopped tracking during ride
Posted: 16 Aug 11 4:51 PM
Twice in the last two weeks my Allsport GPS stopped tracking in the middle of a ride. When I get back to my car, the time function kept working but the milage stopped about 3/4 into the ride. Thus all the data is skewed to the total time and the ride information has to be thrown out. I use an iphone version 4.3.4 and allsport ver 1.5.7 Ideas?

Hmm, that's really weird. Are you in any conditions where it might just be too hard to keep a GPS lock? If the time is still running, that means that the app didn't die, but the GPS just isn't reporting anything.

I'll ask around and see if anyone else has any ideas on this one, but this is the first time I've heard about it.

BTW: what model iPhone do you have?

Thanks,
Bob

I can't think of anything that would stop the tracking function. I've used Allsport in the mountains of North Carolina where it would lose tracking and pick up when it regained a signal. You can tell when this happens as the color of the tracking is different. On two rides a week apart it just stopped tracking in an area that was wide open with no obstacles that would interfere and I've ridden those routes dozens of times with out a problem. If you look on my account, they're listed as aug 7 and aug 14, if that helps.

Is there any chance this might be a battery level thing?

I thought about that but I don't think so. I have run the battery down to 20% or 10% many times without loss of data and several times ran it completely out. I know what it does when that happens. Both times when I got back to my car there was still some battery level remaining.I didn't receive a call or text during the ride so it can't be that (like it use to)I appreciate your input.

Is it the same route that gets cut off, and is this the only route that does? I wonder if there is funny, like a rouge cell tower, or something like that, that might mess it up.

It's not quite the same route but they're about 6 miles apart. I did a ride last night going through both areas where it cut out before and did not have a problem. The only commonality I can think of is they were both on Sundays and both were long rides. One cut out at 40.5 miles of a 72 mile ride and the other cut out at 67.76 miles of an 87 mile ride. Once is a fluke, cut out twice is an issue and if it cuts out again this Sunday, it's a problem. Let's see what happens, I'll let you know if it does it again

ah, ok. Would it be safe to say that trips with lots of elevation change cut out, while flater trips don't?

We are currently working on diagnosing an issue reported stating that very long trips cut out when there is lots of elevation change.

If that's also the issue your having, I can list you as another user who runs into it so that we can have you help us test a fix for it when it becomes available.

It did it again this Sunday. It just stopped working about 31 miles into my ride. It worked fine on a 64 mile ride on Saturday but only lasted 31 miles on Sunday. I didn't discover it until we took a break around the 57 mile mark when I closed the app and started it again and it worked fine for the rest of the ride. Elevation change isn't an issue as we're in South Florida and we won't have more than 15' of elevation change all day.

We have been looking into this issue, and have fixed a few issues that would have been rare, but *might* have been to blame for this.

We are in the process of making a few obvious optimization for long trips, since this feels like it might be that we're just using all the memory that we're allowed to use. But in the mean time, we could give you a build with this bug fix to see if that helps.

Let me know,
Bob

It is doing the same thing on my Android Atrix. I started this morning on a short run. I started it as usual and made sure it was working when I started. It cut off the first 1/2 mile. Then decided to begin at that point. It kept the timer running the whole time though. I am on a completely flat loop with minimal elevation and the run was less than 30 min.

Hi Jsprunger,

So when you started, was the message "GPS read; press Start to begin" displayed? towards the top of the screen in the blue bar? If you aren't sure, could you try a few more times and see if you still experience this issue? I haven't heard of this issue before and would like to help out with it.

You may experience a lack of location updates if you are running near large buildings and or trees.

Regards,

Gregory

I pressed the start button like usual after the GPS said ready. I wait and make sure the timer starts before I begin running. I have been using this program for 3 years now through multiple phones. This is the first problem I've had. There is only one spot I run that is under heavy tree cover and I occasionally lose signal through there but only for a few seconds. Thanks.

@TMShamrock: just realized you were on the iPhone, I thought you were reporting issues against the Android version. The comments about bugs won't apply to you.

So far the only thing in common seems to be Sunday mornings and this problem has only developed over the last three weeks. I've been using Allsport for about 2 1/2 years on two different phones and haven't had this sort of problem before even when I've used it in the Northeast or out West. What could Sunday mornings have any thing to do with it? Your input is appreciated.
