Hiking not calculating calories

Hi...I apologize if this has already been answered, I looked in the forums but didn't see it. When I use the hike function it doesn't show calories (just shows 0). is this normal? The calorie statistic works on walking and road biking. Thanks for any help! Droid X version 4.2.23 |

I had thought a little bit about this a few years ago. It's probably not quite the same sathor... here are my thoughts:
First off, calculating calories is a pretty error prone process, but I think in most situations, there is less error in the day-day fitness activities than the adventure activities.
With hiking if I do one 10 mile hike vs another, in the same amount of time, when I weigh the same, the calories can be wildly different...
Are you hiking in sand? dense wooded areas? a paved path? a very rooted path? What kind of elevation change is there? How much are you carrying in your day pack? What type of boots are you wearing? how many times do you have to cross a river? How much do you have to use your hands?
Overall, I personally came to the conclusion a long time ago, that I shouldn't ever trust the calories that any computer tells me I burned. But for some activities it's worse than others.

| that makes sense, I guess. All the hiking I have done has been more like regular walking, so i had a different frame of reference. |

Same question, though an ESTIMATE would be better than 0, for instance, add an expended effort "slider" (or rate it 1-10 on how hard you feel you worked) then scale it from the walking calculations. While I concur about not trusting the calories any computer tells us, for those that are interested in this statistic, 0 is less meaningful than a well-reasoned estimate, perhaps with an asterisk
related to this: Auto rest detection didn't seem to work at all for the one hike I did with Allsport. Is this not detectable from background motion at low speed? is there something I missed? Thanks |

nroulleau, on rest detection, that may be disabled for hiking, but I'm not sure. I'll confirm and get back to you. We should be able to enable that feature for hiking if it's disabled.

We'll take a look at adding that into a future version. The current version only supports rest detection on: Walking, Running, Road Biking, Mnt Biking, and Skiing.

| I realize that calories cannot be accurately calculated on every activity. That being said, I would still like some basic guess (right or wrong) to register in the device. When burning calories is the goal, I find it rewarding to see a number there at the completion of the activity. |
