AllSport won't open if no cell signal

I am using the new 3.0.57 version on a ski trip, but it is difficult to get a phone signal here. Unfortunately, if I try to open AllSport to record a run, it can't validate my license and I just can't record the trip. The previous version I had didn't validate this way, so had no issues... I know there are other instances I will use the program without a cell phone signal (running, hiking or mountain biking in more remote areas or overseas, etc). I can open it ahead of time if I happen to get a signal, but that doesn't always happen.

| The application should remember the "last authorized" state and allow you to use the application while not in cell phone coverage. We'll try and verify if maybe this has something to do with the application still being under the trial period versus having been purchased. |

Good point guys. We come from a world of "Subscriptions" and so our logic was written assuming that being valid today doesn't mean you'll still be valid tomorrow. We'll look into potentially changing that in a future version.
For now though, what Kevin says is 100% correct. If it fails to perform the networking it is supposed to assume you are still in the last known state, so this shouldn't lock you out. If it is, we will need to fix that very quickly and get an update out.
So did you the application lock you out from using it? or did it let you in and just not work correctly. If it let you in, but then didn't work, the issue is probably that the GPS doesn't work out of network. If it doesn't let you in, then we probably have a bug in our code, which we will need to fix.
If it does lock you out, please let me know the error message that you get and we can debug it.
Also: I can tell that you have a newer blackberry, but I can't tell the specific model number from our back-end. What model BlackBerry do you have? And on which Carrier?
Sorry for the trouble... |

I'm having the same problem Using AllSportGPS Ver 1.4 on an Iphone 3GS. If I'm outside of my cell coverage area, the app begins to boot and I can see the intro screen for 1 or 2 seconds before it kicks me out. Everything works fine if I'm within my cell coverage.
I deleted the app from my phone and then reinstalled using Itunes, but this didn't fix the issue. I've also managed to replicate the problem if I put the phone in Airplane mode.
As near as I can tell, the problem began to occur after installing version 1.4. However, around the same timeframe, I swithched to a new computer and reinstalled Itunes. I don't know if this could be connected, but thought I would mention it for the sake of full disclosure. I hope you guys can find a fix ASAP.

DustyRider,
This is probably a different, but equally concerning issue. I'll make sure that we test this out today and let you know if we can reproduce it or not. If we are able to reproduce it we'll see what we can do to have this fixed in the next release.
When you are in coverage, does everything work ok?

Bob,
The app works perfectly fine when I have cell coverage. It is only outside of my cell area or if I put the phone in airplane mode that it will not boot. I might try starting it within my cell area and then driving out of range to see if continues to work, but this wouldn't really be an acceptable work-around. |

Cool, We have reproduced it and our engineers are looking at the crash logs from it now. We'll make sure to to have update in the next few weeks to work around this one on the iPhone app.
Thanks a ton for reporting the issue.

I have tried to load several times without a signal and was able to get in, but I think I've figured out what happened the first few times... After it tries to validate the license, I get the error message "to.fk: The operation timed out while waiting for a response. (MC1108)". It turns out that if I hit the menu button and choose "next", it lets me in. I can't remember if I had this option before of if I just assumed I couldn't get in, but it's not obvious there is a menu available. If I hit the escape button on the error screen it just closes... I think that is what I did before (I was on a ski lift... not really trying to diagnose it). At any rate, it seems that it really doesn't prevent me getting in... I just got confused and missed that I had an option. |

Thanks Cliffnotes.
Would you expect maybe a button instead of a menu option? Alternatively, maybe we could just skip that screen all together since it's going to let you in anyway. |

| As a workaround, I start Allsport before I leave my coverage area, but don't hit the record button until I start my ride. This system works if you don't use the phone for anything else and have sufficient battery life. This is less than an idea situation so I'm hoping a bug fix will be available soon. |

Just to let you guys know, I'm running verizon version 3.0 on my blackberry tour and it did this to me last weekend. I was nearly 5 miles into my trail run before it validated. I had to keep reopening it because it was timing out since there was no cell coverage. Since verizon is a one time fee with no subscription, i guess there is no reason it should re validate the license each time.
Thanks for the help, Shawn |

Shawn557: when you refer to it validating, do you mean that it was stuck on the "Validating License..." screen for 5 miles? or do you mean that it didn't get GPS for like 5 miles?
It shouldn't get stuck on the "Validating License..." screen for more than 60 seconds or so. It should give up, show you an error, and then let you in.
Let me know, Bob |

Hi Bob,
It was not validating and failing. Guess I never tried to get in after that.....dumb on my part. I just tested it by shutting off the radio and after it fails, you can still get into the program. Sorry for the dumb question without fully testing.
Thanks, Shawn |

Well you aren't the first user to run into that. We will hopefully be changing that around a little in the next version that goes to app world so that it only checks in once, so it shouldn't be an issue in the next version.
Thanks for using the app! |

| I've got 3.0.59 on my Tour running 5.0.0.484 and AllSport launches with no signal (the connection turned off) and gets a GPS fix just fine. |
