elevation gain on the phone vs. actual
Posted: 05 Feb 10 12:06 AM
This is my trip in question.

Link.

As you can see, the elevation gain is only 892 ft, which looks accurate. On the phone it says, 2589 ft. It's almost like the numbers are scrambled with an extra number thrown in. And what is up with me going at 300 mph? LOL.

On first inspection it looks like you have a couple of bad GPS points in the data for that trip, which could explain both the speed spikes and the elevation being off. We'll take a closer look and give you some more detailed info.

Ok, I've researched this issue a little further. We're aware of problems with the speed reported by the GPS on the Nexus One. So your speed spikes are indeed a result of some bad data points. We've gone ahead and removed those points from this particular trip, and as you can see the speed profile looks much better now. We are working on a more permanent fix for these speed spikes, which will be released in an update.

Regarding the discrepancy between elevation statistics, it's caused by two things we do when viewing your trip online. First, for trips uploaded from a cell phone, by default we use survey elevation instead of relying on the GPS elevation, because survey is generally much more accurate. If you edit your trip online and look under the advanced options, you'll see that survey is selected. Second, you'll notice that even if you switch to GPS elevation, the elevation numbers still don't change much on the web. That's because we apply a "smoothing" algorithm so that very slight elevation changes aren't included in the gain and loss. This algorithm currently isn't applied on the phone app, resulting in much larger numbers there. We will be discussing how to improve consistency in the data between the phone and web, including possibly adding the smoothing algorithm to the phone.

Hopefully that answers all your questions; let us know if it doesn't!

Man, I thought I could impress some women with those grossly inflated numbers. Hehehe.

Looks like my speed profile has been corrected. My elevation gain on the phone is still off.

How soon will the elevation bug corrected on the phone? I would like to know in the middle of the trip what my elevation gain is, and it is getting to be annoying to have to finish the trip, and upload the trip to the Web in order to get a more accurate number.

Before the "smoothing algorithm" is applied, the elevation gain is inflated by a factor of 4, 5 or even 10, so it doesn't seem like it is a matter of smoothing numbers. The numbers are wildly off.

At this point, if there was another product out there which may not be as pretty as this, but gives accurate numbers, I'd switch to it. The speed profile is wildly off as well, but I am not as bothered by it as I am by the elevation gain.

We should have a fix for this within the next few weeks. Would you be interested in testing this feature out before it's released?

Can you tell me what the latest is on this?

I am training for a big fundraiser, so a timely fix to this issue would be really nice.

Sorry, we don't have anything ready for you just yet. For now your best bet is to rely on the website numbers after you upload the trip. I know it's not ideal, so again, sorry for the hangup.

profnacho: you are using a Nexus One right?

If so, we might have something for you to try out before it launches :-)

If you look at the speed profiles, all of them have speed spikes even though I've taken my rides to multiple trails. It appears that almost all trails have bad data points, and the program should anticipate them.
