Web Statistics Different than iPhone Statistics
Posted: 06 Oct 09 4:55 PM
I used the application for the first time today and did a 5k run. After viewing the session on my phone some of the data points didn't seem right. After logging into the website, the data points were different and appeared to be accurate. Below I have the comparison of each. The Average Speed was not correct on the phone, but was correct on the web. After using Google Earth to (unscientifically) calculate the elevation gain it seems the web also reported the elevation gain and loss much more accurately than the phone. Why would the web be displaying different metrics than the phone?

iPhone:
Distance: 3.09 mi (Change units)
Average Speed: 7.96 mph
0:07:12/mi
Duration: 0:23:15
Elevation:
Total Gain: 358 ft
Total Loss: 328 ft

Website:
Distance: 3.09 mi (Change units)
Average Speed: 8.0 mph
0:07:31/mi
Duration: 0:23:15
Elevation:
Total Gain: 203 ft
Total Loss: 201 ft
Net Change: 2 ft

Elevation values from Gps devices is notoriously inaccurate. Therefore, when you upload the trip to the server, we also give each track point an elevation value from the USGS Survey Elevation data set. You then have the option to choose between either 'Gps Elevation' or 'Survey Elevation' in the 'edit info' page of a trip under the 'Advanced' section. We default to survey when you upload a trip from your phone. We've also recently added a 10 meter delta threshold to the calculation of the total gain/loss values. You can read more about that in this thread.

The average speed on the web site is probably just a rounding thing for display purposes. But the average pace on the iPhone is wrong. We'll make note of it and try to look into it some more. If you can easily reproduce it, let us know.

Thanks for the interest and feedback.

I ran the same route today and it looks like the Average Pace is still incorrect on the iPhone (see below). Also, is there any way to view the Survey elevation change on the phone? That seems to be the number I want as opposed to the GPS Elevation. Thanks
Travis

WEBSITE:
Distance: 3.07 mi (Change units)
Average Speed: 8.1 mph
0:07:24/mi
Duration: 0:22:46
Elevation: Total Gain: 200 ft
Total Loss: 202 ft
Net Change: -2 ft

IPHONE:
Distance: 3.07 mi
Average Speed: 8.09 mph
0:07:06 min/mi
Duration: 0:22:46
Elevation: Total Gain: 426 ft
Total Loss: 437 ft
Net Change: -2 ft

Thanks, Travis. We will look into reproducing this and fixing the bug.

As for the Survey Elevation, unfortunately we don't have a way to use that data directly on the phone. It is such a large data set that there really isn't a good way for the phone to store it or request it.

Thanks for the feedback though and taking the time to identify and report a problem.

Thanks for the response. I wonder if all other iPhone users just think they are running really fast!

I can understand about the Survey Elevation. I now know to just check the results on the web after uploading a workout. Thanks.

Today I ran into another discrepency between the phone data and the web data. The Distance on the web was incorrect. I did have a brief interruption (stop & start) during my session. I'm guessing that is what caused it. Also, I haven't heard any updates on the Average Speed and Average Pace bug. Is that coming in an update soon? I have screenshots from the phone but I cannot attach here. I can e-mail them if you'd like.

Thanks,
Travis
