Picket Post Mountain has always loomed large every time we journeyed from Phoenix toward Eastern AZ on US60. We always said we'd climb it one day and Sunday Sept 4 we finally did. What a climb! The route is 2.25 miles to the top with 2,000' vertical - almost all vertical is covered in 1.5 miles. The route starts from a nice parking lot that is part of the Arizona Trail, traverses a road for a brief period, then a trial, and finally a route up a steep cliff to the top. Good route finding skills are a must and be prepared to use your hands for climbing in many parts of the cliff ascent. Don't worry, it's not that bad and no technical gear is required.

Points of Interest

Another Grave

Location: 33.261345, -111.159691
At the NW point overlooking the arboritum we found another grave right next to an antenna tower that was decommisioned (by the wind most likely). A placard was on the grave containing the ashes of Tommii Willard. There was also a PVC pipe with letters

Boy Scout Cache

Location: 33.258331, -111.154816
Dale found a PVC pipe cache from a Gilbert, AZ Boy Scout troop with a letter inside. Water had found its way into the PVC and the letter was illegible.

Cactus in bloom

Location: 33.261024, -111.159218
Beautiful flowers on this barrel cactus.

Dale after conquering the summit

Location: 33.256721, -111.157845
Dale is reading the 'mail' that came from the mailbox in the background. It's a gorgeous Sunday morning around 9am Sept 5, 2005. Temps are in the low 80's at the 4,375' summit.

Dale and the Arizona Trail

Location: 33.271858, -111.176407
Dale is at the parking lot trailhead where the Arizona Trail comes through. Picket Post Mountain is in the background - the ascent is right up the cliff crack between the 'Z' and 'O' in Arizona!

Fossil

Location: 33.260433, -111.159370
We decide to take a different route down at the top and discovered a gallon water container intact. It crumbled upon the slightest touch due to UV exposure and inside was a fossil of a mouse. It must have died once it got inside!

Grave

Location: 33.258492, -111.154922
Less than 50 yards from the Boy Scout cache we found a grave with a gorgeous view of Superior, AZ in the background.

Info

Location: 33.273140, -111.184799
From Phoenix take U.S. 60 east. Midway between mile markers 221 and 222 look for Forest Road 231 heading south. Follow it 0.3 mile to a T junction then turn east and follow the road 0.8 mile (the sign says 0.6) to the large parking area

On the way back

Location: 33.265388, -111.172089
This is the road heading back to the parking lot. You can't see it here, but Weavers Needle is visable right down the center line of the road in the distance

Picket Post Mailman

Location: 33.256729, -111.157806
This box has a history - while on duty in Oregon it was run over by a John Deere Tractor, subsequently repaired, then hit by a drunk driver. After the final repair it was placed here by a Winter resident of Superior.
