Reasonably easy stroll following the tame grades of the legendary Pacific Crest Trail for much of the way. I visited at sunset, but dawn is rumored to be spectacular here. Views to the Pacific in the W, and Salton Sea to the E on clear days. After leaving a note on the ammo can trail log at the summit retrace your steps, follow the old jeep trail south of the PCT, or continue north west on the PCT to intersect with the road further up. TO TRAILHEAD: Exit I-8 at Sunrise Hwy. Drive 13.8 mi N to Penny Pines trailhead. Stop at the general store in Laguna Mountain (9.9 mi from I-8) to pick up your $5 daily Adventure Pass required for parking. Sorry - lost the tracklog data on this one :( I'd guess it's a couple miles one way from Penny Pines to the Garnet Peak summit.

Passed Garnet Peak Trailhead hiking back along road to Penny Pines. Place to park off road, but no markings or signage. Looks to have been former jeep trail.
