The largest island on the Columbia River, Sauvie Island is home to pancake-flat roads and peaceful rural serenity. Cruise through its gentle farmland before taking on a quad-busting climb on this 41-mile ride starting at the Rock Creek Tavern in Hillsboro.
Your climbing starts almost immediately with a 2.7-mile churn up Old Cornelius Pass Road. Upon hitting Newberry Road, enjoy the subsequent downhill, which ends near the bridge leading to the idyllic Sauvie Island. Stock up on supplies at the Cracker Barrel convenience store before beginning a flat, 12-mile loop around the island on relaxing, rural roads.
Upon re-entering the mainland, head north along US 30 before hanging a left on Rocky Point Road to head into the hills and begin the ride's toughest climb. Stretching over 3.5 miles at a formidable 7.4-percent grade, the ascent culminates with vistas of snow-capped Mount Rainier and Mount Adams on the horizon. From here, it's an easy 12-mile descent back to Old Cornelius Pass Road, where the Rock Creek Tavern beckons with the promise of well-deserved burgers and brews.
