8/8/09 Lovers Camp to Deep Lake. Left Lovers Camp around 1:30 p.m. By the map, this was supposed to be a ~7.5 mile hike. It turned out to be 11. It was 6.8 to Little Elk Lake alone. Arrived at Deep Lake with enough time to cook and set up camp. Looks like there are Brook Trout in lake.
8/9/09 Deep Lake to Red Rock Creek. On the trail just a little after 7. Hiked back to Little Elk Lake and attempted to take the trail that cuts over the ridge to Summit Lake. Athough we could find occasional cairns, there never was a constructed trail and the going was very slow in the brush and fallen timber. After a mile of this, I had the group turn back. I didn't want to risk an injury and this was supposed to be a fun trip. Also lots of bear sign and a two places, we were close enough to the bruins to smell them. We headed back to Little Elk Lake and then to Red Rock Creek, where we camped between the creek and the trail. Photographed a Cascades Frog (Rana cascadae). No fish in creek.
8/10/09 Red Rock Creek to Campbell Lake. Hiked up Red Rock Creek meadows to the PCT. Near the top encountered a smoldering fire and smoke jumper equipment. Continued SE on PCT to Summit Lake Trail. Found two Coastal Giant Salamanders (Dicamptodon tenebrosus) in outlet creek. Continued to Campbell Lake, which had a lot of other hikers. Finally had a chance to fish and caught a 13" Brown Trout and some smaller Brook Trout.
8/11/09 Campbell Lake to Summit Lake. Got up early and caught another one of those Brown Trout. Took the group to Cliff Lake for the morning and then hiked over to Summit Lake. Caught nice Rainbows and small Brooks at Cliff Lake. Both species also present at Summit Lake.
8/12/09 Summit Lake to Lower Sky High Lakes. Cimbed back out to the PCT and ran along the crest down to the turnoff to Sky High Lakes. Intesting cabin down by the lower lake. It has a nice view across the meadow to the Marble Mountain. Rainbows in the lake, but a front came in and put them off the bite.
8/13/09 Day hike to Spirit Lake. Saw some grouse in the early morning in the meadow. The group was antsy and needed to go out for a long hike. Spirit Lake fit the bill. Spirit is small and rather brushy. Got a good look at the backside of the Marble Mountain and could see across the Klamath into the Red Buttes Wilderness in Oregon. In May I had stood at Cook and Green Pass and looked in the opposite direction to the Marble Mounts. The grey white marble is pretty cool. That afternoon caught a nice rainbow in Lower Sky High.
8/14/09 Lower Sky High Lake to Marble Gap and Lovers Camp. Hiked down to Gate Lake and then over to Little Marble Valley. Left our gear at the cabin on the PCT and then went up to the Mable Gap. Great views. Then took Canyon Creek Trail down to the parking lot at Lovers Camp. Our ride was scheduled to show up on the 15th so we just camped at the trailhead.
Great trip. I want to go back.
TO TRAILHEAD: I-5 to Yreka. Highway 3 from Yreka to Ft. Jones. At west end of Ft. Jones, make a right onto Scott River Road. Turn left at Indian Scotty Park and continue up mountain to Lovers Camp.
