San Fransisco - Land's End Coastal Trail 

Hike along the part of the California Coastal Trail from the picturesque Land's End to the historical Sutro Baths. This four mile out and back provides awesome views of the coastal inlet of San Francisco Bay and the iconic Golden Gate Bridge to the historical ruins of the Sutro Baths.

Arrive at the Land's End vista where on a clear day will provide a view looking straign into the gate and the Golden Gate Bridge. Reminants of turn of the century gun emplacements. Head back to Coastal Trail by retracing route back down to the beach or the narrow foot path on the ridge.

Arrive at Mile Rock Beach. The rocky beach sits in a small some what protected alcove.

Arrive at the ruins of the Sutro Baths. Explore the cave to the north and the baths below where thousands of San Franciscans used to swim and recreate. When done, retraice route to the Lands End trailhead.

Arrive at a large concrete landing providing close up views of the rocky coasts. Sounds of sea lions and seaguls permeate the misty shores. L at the bottom of the steps and pick up the trail that winds down towards the baths.

R @ Y. Turn right onto the well marked Sutro Baths Upper Trail and descent down the steep trail of wooden steps. Salty smell of the sea is most prevelant as you journey down the steps to the baths.

R @ 3-way. Stay on the main route to the right and continue up on the wooden steps a lttle longer then start your descent. Numerous fog horns serenade the bay on foggy days.

R @ 3-way. Stay right on the main trail at the intersection with trail to the Palace of Legion of Honor. Small trees and shurbs line both sides of the trail. A lot of avian activity in the area.

R @ Y. Stay right at intersection with the trail to Ft. Miley and the USS San Francisco Memorial. A concrete overlook is across from the steps up to the memorial and provides views of the rocky coastline and the site of many shipwrecks. The trail here is wide and made of asphalt letting you know you are getting close to civilization.

R @ 3-way. Stay right at intersection with the trail to El Camino del Mar. The smell of Anise is heavy in this area. The wide trail is still a mix of dirt and gravel. More cypress trees in the area.

Trailhead. Park along the street and pick up the trail at the well marked Land's End trailhead. The trail follows the northern coastline of the SF Bay inlet. Views of the Golden Gate bridge from outside the gate are a highlight on clear days. The dirt and gravel trail starts out fairly level and gently winds under the canopy of Cypress and Eucalyptus trees. The trail is popular with runners but, other than the Eagle Point overlook, it is not overrun by tourists.

L @ Y. Stay left at intersection with Mile Rock Beach trail. The trail turns a bit inland but glimpses of the rocky coast can still be had. Moss and ferns fill the rocky southern side of the trail. Spur - Take the Mile Rock Beach trail down to Mile Rock Beach and then up to the Land's End lookout.
