I forgot to start my GPS till we had reached the cemetery, hence the two tracks as I had to draw in that portion later. I was excited that we were able to walk to the Army Cemetery, as until recently there was no safe way to walk there. But at last a sidewalk was installed along 4th Plain Blvd. Three Medal of Honor honorees are buried in the cemetery, including one of the first African-American honorees.
The walk then passed through Clark College and down through the Fort Vancouver area to the new Land Bridge. This pedestrian bridge links the Columbia River paths with Fort Vancouver National Historic Site, providing a safe crossing over Hwy. 14. But more than that, it is a superb artistic installation designed by Maya Lin, the designer of the awesome Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington DC. As Maya accomplished with that project, the Land Bridge is subtle, gorgeous, and inspirational. It has stops the celebrate the People, the Land, and the River. Even the lighting at night shines arrowheads onto the ground to light the way. I am proud of a city and a country that supports this sort of functional art.
