Warren Wagon Road Twenty-Mile Trailhead and Upper Payette Lake, tweny miles north of McCall, Idaho. Upper Payette Lake is good for family camping, canoeing, fishing, and bird watching. A handicapped accessible trail goes from the main Payette River inlet to the Twenty Mile Creek inlet. Use this area as a base for a strenuous hike to twenty mile lakes, not shown on this map, or an easy day hike along the flat meadow portion of the twenty mile creek before the fork to the high lakes trail.

The bottom three miles of this trail is good for beginning hikers or mountain bikers--a good destination is the junction of the Twenty Mile Lakes trail just as the main trail starts to bend to the southeast. At first the trail crosses burnt, dry lodgepole, but soon you are in moose habitat -- a wide glacial valley with old-growth forest, deep grass, and meandering stream. In July 2003 lots of deadfall blocked the trail at about three and a quarter miles. Steve Steubner optimistically describes a one-way mountain bike ride from Duck Lake to the Twenty Mile trailhead in his book, Mountain Biking Idaho, but I've got my doubts about this--I found that the trail was a bit steep and wild for mountain biking above the end of the trail segment shown on this map.

The gravel road from the Upper Payette Lake campground to the Payette River inlet was part of the old Warren Wagon Road. This is a favorite bike ride for my daughter when we camp in this area.

Paved traill from the Payette river inlet to Twenty Mile Creeks inlet. This trail was designed for wheelchair access but seems to be falling into disrepair. In July 2003 a wheelchair could have made the trip, just barely, but with assistance at one point to clear a downed log. The trail ends at the Twenty Mile Creek inlet of Upper Payette lake. This is an excellent place for viewing wildlife. We saw herons, osprey, and mergansers on our hike.

We found a handwritten note on a map that marked this point as the trailhead for camp creek, and sure enough, there's a trailhead. Where it goes, I don't know.

Upper Payette Lake Campground is improved with a campground hosts, gravel parking, hand-pumped water and outhouses. Because the lake is a no-wake zone, this is a good place for fishing, canoeing, and wildlife viewing. While here we saw Ospreys and herons fishing. We also saw and heard a pair of Loons, very rare in Idaho.

Location: 45.135197, -116.021965
