Conditions can change dramatically rounding Cache Point. Find temporary shelter around here if Saganaga is moody.

CAMP1

Location: 48.283829, -90.993057
First night campsite abuts a smooth rock prominentary. Watch for otters in the bay to the south. Good smallmouth bass fishing action.

CAMP2

Location: 48.296387, -91.002075
Second camp of the trip after a relatively short paddling day. Watch for moose and eagles. Kick back and spend some extra time fishing just offshore. around dusk.

CAMP3

Location: 48.209560, -91.022606
Final night's camp in Cache Bay makes for a short hop to the ranger's island in the morning.

CHANNEL

Location: 48.230751, -91.028595
Enter the channel in the shadow of a 100 ft high rock wall, the site of native American skurmishes.

DEADMANN

Location: 48.280544, -91.028107
North end of Deadman's portage. Somewhat busy, but relatively short. Many folks on their way on the Falls Chain overnight on the islands just north of here.

South end of Deadman's portage

FALLS

Location: 48.232452, -91.055969
Silver Falls - the highest in Quetico Park.

FISH

Location: 48.298729, -90.998955
All of the water moves through this narrows on its way to the Falls Chain and on to Hudson Bay. Troll with jigs for walleye or hunt for smallmouth bass around shoreline snags.

GAP

Location: 48.212669, -90.931236
Like so much of the navigation on Saganga this point can be tough to spot from the water. The gap between Munker and Long Islands is a very useful waypoint.

HOOK ISL

Location: 48.224220, -90.963631
Begin your adventure from the cresent shaped cove on the Hook Island lee.

MOUTH

Location: 48.199543, -90.880020
Inbound: The river mouth can be tough to spot on the way back in. Shoot for this waypoint and it will help a bunch.

OPENN

Location: 48.273380, -91.030060
Open water south of here demands respect. Use caution and keep the shoreline close when conditions require.

OPENS

Location: 48.251118, -91.053276
Open water north of here demands respect. Use caution and keep the shoreline close when conditions require.

OUTFITTER

Location: 48.171848, -90.890762
Arrange for tow from one of several area outfitters to Hook Island on the border between the US and Canada. Doing so knocks off a couple hours paddle and gets you into the wilderness more quickly. I took a tow out and paddled back at the end of the trip.

PICTOGRAPH

Location: 48.212677, -91.046967
Ponder distinctive native American rock art at this locale. Refrain from photography to respect the current wishes of tribal elders.

RANGER

Location: 48.211983, -91.011780
Secure permits and fishing licenses at the Cache Bay ranger station. Say hi to 22-year veteran Janice and chat a while if she's not busy. Inbound: depart NW for the channel on the N side of the bay.

RIVER

Location: 48.182732, -90.886559
Inbound: Hang a right at the point into the Seagull River.

ROCK

Location: 48.299561, -90.989655
Take a break at this funky shoal. Excellent fishing in this area and to the west of here.

ROCKY PT

Location: 48.218651, -90.962593
Avoid crossing the open water east of here if swells are too big. Hug the shore and pass south of Gold Island if necessary. Noreasters can make Saganaga a real challenge.

SHORT

Location: 48.215874, -91.034843
Portage a few feet to save a couple miles going around the point. A forest fire was buring on the point a hundred yards to the north during my visit.

SILVERN

Location: 48.236687, -91.057617
North end of Silver Falls portage.

SILVERS

Location: 48.231720, -91.055267
South end of Silver Falls portage. Generally rocky and of moderate length. Often busy as it is somewhat of a bottelneck in this section of the park. Avoid blocking others with your boat or gear if you double-trip.

TURN

Location: 48.210712, -90.898712
Inbound: Swing south around this point, avoiding the numerous blind bays if you are intent on getting back efficiently.
