This is a long, evenly-graded hike on a long-rehabed road (into a trail) in the Kachina Peaks Wilderness, Coconino NF, outside Flagstaff, AZ.
Hike from approx. 8,000' to a bit over 10,800'. And back, of course.
One can also start at the Friedline Praire Rd for a trip that is 2 miles shorter. The road, however, will take extra time because it is not well-maintained.
Park at the Schultz Tank TH and cross the road and begin hiking the Weatherford Trail. In 1.8 miles you reach an intersection, continue straight ahead, on the Weatherford and into the Kachina Peaks Wilderness. Lovely.
The old road was long ago closed, and now it provides an evenly-graded approach to Doyle Saddle. From the Ponderosa into the Firs and Limber Pines.
One can continue to Freemont Saddle or for the truly ambitious, to Humphreys Peak, highest in Arizona. Take lots of water, you are unlikely to find any along the way (except for small snow filelds early in the season).
