A classic central Oregon ride, this 40.4-mile out-and-back in Deschutes National Forest climbs to the base of Mount Bachelor, a snow-capped stratovolcano in the Cascade Range.
Start from Skyliner Park and climb Cascade Lakes Highway to Mount Bachelor Ski Resort and the base of 9,065-foot Mount Bachelor. Prepare for a steady, 20-mile grind with intermittent views of Bachelor's snow-capped summit. Even if climbing is not your forte, take it slow for an enjoyable, scenic spin to the ski area. (Mount Bachelor's Sunrise Lodge is closed during summer riding season, so bring your own supplies.)
At the top, park your bike and savor the mountain scenery. To lengthen your trip, ride the chairlift to Pine Marten Lodge for majestic views of the Three Sisters, Broken Top, and the High Cascade Lakes.
The return trip down Cascade Lakes Highway follows the annual Pole Pedal Paddle's biking leg and offers a cruisy, non-technical descent back to town.
