“It’s a ride so pretty you’ll pee yourself,” says Mike Weiss, the longtime owner of Big Shark Bicycle Company in St. Louis, of his favorite 63-miler just across the river. Thanks to the mighty Mississippi, local roads interlace across a seemingly endless valley of floodplains, levees, bluffs, and sheer cliffs hundreds of feet high. To hit the best of them, start in Columbia, Illinois, and roll over hills that add up to about 3,500 feet of elevation gain. Coast through quaint Maeystown, where store signs read Open by luck or accident. You won’t need to leave much time for the superfast return trip along the riverbank, where tailwinds can push you home at 30 miles an hour.
