Caldera loop

This scenic and low-traffic route explores ranch country and open space between Niwot and CO 36, contouring around the eastern and southern edges of the caldera hills south of Lyons. There's a gravel stretch of about 3 miles in the middle that's fine for road bikes. Great views and good variety of flat and rolling terrain. No big climbs. You could keep a fast pace on this one.

We did it on a glorious indian summer day -- sunny enough that we all got a bit of sunburn. Midway through, we passed a farm stand offering free produce, and passed around a couple delicious sun-warmed tomatoes that tasted like a slightly chunky version of the freshest pasta sauce you've ever eaten. A couple hard sprints made it feel tougher than 25 miles.
