This century ride features a mix of suburban and rural roads. Newly opened roads are highlighted by this route. There are four SAG stops with a fifth self-SAG stop. The longest distance between stops is 25.65 miles. The total distance is 101.24 miles.
From the starting point, the route climbs gently but relentlessly, gaining about 260 feet of elevation in the 14 miles to the first SAG stop. As you ride north on the North Valley Parkway, watch for the distinctive shape of Gavilan Peak on the horizon directly to the north. Your second SAG is on the other side of that peak! Check your food and water supplies because it's over 23 miles from SAG1 to SAG2 and there's not much out there. The route makes a wide loop to the west on Carefree Highway and New River Road as you gradually gain another 430 feet of elevation. There are cattle guards out here so be careful crossing them and call them out to other riders. After you pass under I-17 at New River, your third SAG is east on New River Rd., just after you cross another cattle guard. So, after 37 miles of nearly steady climbing, you get back almost almost 300 feet over the next 10 miles back to Carefree Highway. As you turn east, you climb gently for 5 miles crossing the Cave Creek wash. Black Mountain dominates the horizon as you approach the third SAG stop. It's over 24 miles to the self-SAG stop, so think twice before passing up this stop. This stop is at St. Gabriel Catholic Church. There is a driveway on the south side of Rancho Paloma Drive just before you get to Cave Creek Rd. The next 13 miles represents a thousand feet of elevation gain. Ride through the towns of Cave Creek and Carefree, heading east. As you turn off of Cave Creek Road onto Lone Mountain Road, you are at the highest point on the route. At around 3000 feet, you are 60 miles into the ride and it's pretty much all down hill from here. Down Pima Road, the self-SAG is the quaint and colorful General Store. It's just west of the southwest corner of Pima and Pinnacle Peak Roads. There are outside restrooms and water fountains to the left of the store. Continue your decent back into the Valley, gently dropping another 440 feet over the next 12 miles to the final SAG stop where Deer Valley Road crosses the CAP canal. With only a little more than 12 miles to go, the route follows bike lanes almost the entire remainder of the route. It may feel level, or maybe even slightly uphill, but you really are dropping about 270 feet as you coast into the finish.
